The Jonah Project: Mission Statement

About The Jonah Project

The Jonah Project is a 501c3 Tax Exempt charity. We are located in the heart of Skid Row, on 6th Street between San Julian and San Pedro streets in Los Angeles, CA.  Skid Row is home to over 10,000 homeless people residing in a 50 block area. We are reaching and helping the residents of Skid Row in the following ways:

Glory to God

The Jonah Project was brought about by the divine intervention of God, thus our first and foremost mission is to glorify Him in all we do.  We unashamedly lift up the person of Jesus Christ, that God may be glorified through His Son.

“Not to us, O LORD, but to you goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.” (Psalm 115:1)

Spiritual Needs

We are committed to providing for the physical needs of the people on the streets of Skid Row, however, their spiritual needs are of our highest priority. We understand that God is more concerned about where they will spend eternity than where they will spend the night. So, our main objective will be to provide for their spiritual well-being, as well as their temporal needs.  Here are some of the areas we believe we have been called to address:

Salvation:

There are many lost souls on the streets of Skid Row in need of salvation. The Word of God instructs us to, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”  (Mark 16:15)

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” (Rom 1:16)

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Rom 10:13)

It is our mission to teach about God’s wonderful plan of salvation, by preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. The scriptures teach us that the gospel "is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes” but "how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”  (Rom 10:13-14)   It is, therefore, our goal to preach the gospel to everyone we meet on Skid Row.

Discipleship:

Jesus said: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt 28:19).  Not only did Jesus tell us to preach the gospel to all the world, He also instructs us to “make disciples”.  Therefore, we are committed to “making disciples” of those who have accepted the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Many times it is not possible for people to leave Skid Row, even after accepting the gospel of Jesus.  But they can be taught how to serve God, avoid temptation and live for Christ right there on the streets of Skid Row. This can be accomplished through faith, power of the Holy Spirit and a strong foundation. The word of God teaches us that faith overcomes the world:

“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” (1 John 5:4-5)

The word also teaches that “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Rom 10:17).  We are committed not only to preach the gospel, but to preach the whole council of the word of God.  We achieve this through men’s and women’s Bible study and discipleship groups. These are held several times per week, along with personal counseling.  It is our desire to build strong Christians with solid Biblical foundation, who can in turn go back into the streets and lead others to Christ.

Physical Needs

The scriptures also teach us the necessity of helping others with their physical needs.

“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.”  (Matt 25:45)

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” (1 John 3:17)

“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (James 2:15-17)

We are most certainly committed to providing for the physical needs of the people we minister to in the following ways.

Feeding:

With the help of local churches, our goal is to serve dinner on the streets            5-7 days per week.

Clothing:

We have a clothes closet where residents of Skid Row can come daily to get clothing, socks, under garments and hygiene products.

Shelter:

We will be working with other local organizations to help provide both short and long term housing for the residents of Skid Row.

Employment:

We will also be working with local organizations to help provide computer job searching, assistance with resumes and interviews, necessary training, and work transportation.

Conclusion

At The Jonah Project it is our desire to lift up the name and person of Jesus Christ and bring glory to God our Father. We feel that the best way to accomplish this is by being the hands, arms, feet and mouth of Jesus Christ to the lost and dying world around us. We will be the hands of Jesus by reaching out and touching the lives of those on Skid Row with the love of Christ. We will be His arms by wrapping ours around the residents of Skid Row in love, compassion and friendship. We will be His feet by going into areas where lost, confused, violent, and hopeless people are gathered. And we will be His mouth by preaching the uncompromising truth of the word of God and the glorious gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is the power of salvation to those who believe!
